Our past has shaped the present by many things in history including sports, here is how sports marked our history today.

Baseball

  • In 1906 after an 8 minute argument over an umpire call the NY Highlanders win on forfeit over Philadelphia A’s, Highlanders’ MLB record 5th doubleheader sweep on consecutive days

Golf

  • In 1932 at the PGA Championship, Olin Dutra wins the first of 2 major titles, beating Frank Walsh 4 & 3

Miscellaneous

  • In 1920 Man o’ War wins the 1 5/8-mile Lawrence Realization Stakes at Belmont Park by 100 lengths, the largest winning margin in modern thoroughbred racing history, world record time 2.40.8

Olympics

  • In 1972 the US 4 x 100m medley relay team of Mike Stamm, Tom Bruce, Mark Spitz & Jerry Heidenreich sets world record 3:48.16 to win gold at the Munich Olympics. Mark Spitz becomes the first athlete to win 7 Olympic gold medals at a single Games

Tennis

  • In 1944 at the Women’s US National Championship, Pauline Betz Addie wins her third straight US title; beats Margaret Osborne 6-3, 8-6
