REPLAY
The 2018 Missoula Maverick Memorial Day Tournament kicked off Friday with the Missoula Mavericks taking on the Vauxhall Jets and the Jets opened up the weekend with a walk off win over the Mavs.
Dylan Chalmers earned the nod on the bump for the Mavs and Missoula’s ace pitcher did a fine job of holding off the Jets in the opening innings until Jets designated hitter Evan O’Toole sent the ball over the fence to get Vauxhall on the board with a single shot. The opposing pitchers kept a tight reign on the game, fending batters off one after another, but it was their infield counter parts who had errors that doomed the two sides as a total of eight where scored.
Missoula got on the board in the fifth inning with a pair of runs off Vauxhall errors and the game was tied back up. The Jets were not done knocking the ball over the fence as Ty Penner stepped to plate and served himself up a single shot of home run power, and Vauxhall was back in the lead. The Jets did a good job of tying up the Maverick batters as Missoula was held to a .136 average as a team, only James Martin, Dane Fraser, and Brendan Buchanan reached of a hit.
The tournament will get into full swing Saturday with four games scheduled on the day with the Jets taking on the Butte Miners at 11:00 am in the first game.
